Before I started Twinkle Apothecary, I was a broke single mom* in Los Angeles who moisturized with straight up coconut oil because I could buy it with my food stamps.
I'd leave the jar in my kitchen so I could use it for cooking, but I'd spoon out a couple of tablespoons at a time to keep in my medicine cabinet in the bathroom. I loved that that little bit of oil lasted such a long time, smelled amazing, and was so good at keeping my skin hydrated and comfortable.
It's literally the only moisturizing product that I used on my body.
That same SNAP funded coconut oil is also how I created my first DIY deodorant, which led to me starting this business.
When I came up with the idea to make scented natural deodorant with perfumes to match, I knew that a scented body oil was a must. Only I knew that I wanted it to be more efficient, non-pore clogging, and faster absorbing than my plain old coconut oil.
So imagine my surprise when I finally created my perfect body oil recipe, only to have it be met with confusion and a million questions at my local farmer's market...
"Body Oil? What is that?!"
"Body + Bath Oil? So like, you use it in the bath?"
"Is this soap?"
"Doesn't it make you all greasy?"
"Can I add it to my regular lotion?"
And so on and so on...
So, for those of you who have been buying lotion and totally missing out on all of the wonderful benefits of oil, I present my top 5 reasons to moisturize with body oil.
1. It's effective AF
So, most lotions are water, oil, and an emulsifier (typically some kind of mystery wax) to bind them together. Using body oil is like cutting out the middle man. You get all of the hydrating, skin nourishing benefits of the oil, without the pointless wasted water and mystery ingredient emulsifying wax.
Simply put: it's WAY more potent.
More bang for your buck.
(Speaking of $$$, get the 8 oz size... it's a m u c h better value than the 2 oz bottle!)
2. It's an anti-aging treatment for your body
Let's talk ingredients:
Sunflower oil - lightweight, soothing, rich in vitamins A, D, E
Grapeseed oil - lightweight, astringent, (skin/pore tightening) full of vitamin E and essential fatty acids
Evening primrose oil - FULL of omega 6, vitamin E... people actually take this oil as a supplement because it's so good for your skin!
Rosehip oil - considered a "dry oil" rich in vitamin C, fades age spots, hydrates fine lines, repairs damaged tissue.
AND THAT'S IT.
I add Tocopherol Oil (more vitamin E) as an antioxidant to extend the shelf life, and my signature essential oil blends for fragrance.
No mystery ingredients, EVER.
These plant based superhero oils soak right in and get to work healing, plumping, and rejuvenating your skin straight away!
3. It's multitasking
The primary purpose of this product is to hydrate the skin on your body.
But it also works as a massage oil,
half of an exfoliating scrub, (just add salt/sugar/coffee grounds/rosehip seed oil)
and yes, to answer your question, you CAN PUT IT IN THE BATH!
Just one dropper (or pump) full will soften your water, add a rich fragrance, and protect your skin from the drying effects of a hot bath.
Can your basic lotion do all of this?
I didn't think so.
4. It's practically perfume
If you're low maintenance but still like to smell nice, this is a low key alternative to dousing yourself in fragrance. It's well concentrated without being overpowering.
Two-in-one, you might say...
5. It's efficient
One pump from our 8 oz bottle will go a long way, and it soaks right in to your skin, even if you're short on time.
I think the main deterrent from using oils is the fear of being greasy/oily, and not wanting to wait for the oil to soak in before you put on your clothes,
which is exactly why I designed my oil to be a lightweight, dry oil that soaks in quickly.
It's completely different from the plain coconut oil I was using before, which I'll admit, did stain a couple of my favorite outfits!
So, what do you think?
